Health Care Assistant

Admission Eligibility Requirements

High school graduation or mature student status, with a minimum English 10 or equivalent and Math 10 or equivalent.

Students who have not been educated in an English-speaking environment (a country with English language systems/institutions) are required to meet English language requirements as outlined in the BC Care Aide Registry.

The following requirements must be met pre-practice:

  • Standard First Aid Certification with CPR level “C”
  • BC Food Safe Certificate Level 1
  • Proof of a negative TB skin test. In case of a positive TB skin test, a negative TB chest x-ray report is required (this requirement is only valid for 6 months).
  • Solicitor General criminal record search confirming the student has no criminal record
  • Updated immunizations for the following diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis B, and current influenza vaccination and COVID vaccinations.

Program Outline

This program is comprised of 3 levels, which all consist of laboratory and clinical experience as well as theory. The theory aspect is built around presentations, special guest speakers, group discussions, and lectures. Students will then apply the theory components learned to the laboratory and clinical settings.

Level One has a duration of 12 weeks and is mainly held in the classroom, with laboratory and some clinical experience as well. This level will provide the framework for caregiving. The continuing care setting will be introduced to students in this level.

Level Two will add onto the basic knowledge and skills students gained in Level One, and lasts 8 weeks. The focus in this level is primarily around special care, such as home management and patients with dementia and similar conditions.

Level Three is comprised solely of clinical experience in the community setting as well as a complex care facility and special care unit. This level has a duration of 7 weeks.

When all 28.5 credits are obtained, the student will have successfully completed the course.
