Residential Construction Foundations
Students will be introduced to various aspects used in multiple trades, including the use of tools, both power and hand tools, as well as other equipment utilized by carpenters. Students will be given the opportunity to work with frequently used products and materials during the construction of a residential wood-frame project. Some of these products and materials include concrete, hardware, lumbar, and panelling. Students will obtain a practical understanding of the construction industry throughout this program.
Upon graduation, students will receive credit for Level 1 apprenticeship technical training and could also be granted practical credit by the Industry Training Authority.
Admission Eligibility Requirements
- Grade 12 graduation or equivalent, or 19 years of age and out of secondary school for at least one year as of the first day of classes
- One of the following courses: English 10, English 10 First Peoples, or an equivalent Provincial Level Adult Basic Education English course
Math requirement:
- Students who graduated high school in or prior to 2012: Mathematics 11 or an equivalent Advanced Level Adult Basic Education Mathematics course
- Students who were in Grade 10 in or after 2010, thus completing the new mathematics curriculum must have one of the following courses: Workplace Mathematics 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11 or, Pre-Calculus 11, or an equivalent Advanced Level Adult Basic Education Mathematics course
- Students will undertake written exams, case studies, presentations, and assignments to assess their theoretical knowledge. Practical performance will be assessed by instructor observations of students in work experience and field situations as well as final evaluations.
- Students must achieve at least 70% on technical, practical, and theoretic testing components. If a student does not achieve the 70% minimum, they may retake the course the next time it is offered if there is space available.
- Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Residential Construction Foundations certificate. Graduates will also receive the Carpenter Foundation certificate of Completion from the Industry Training Authority.
- Students who complete the ITA Carpentry Foundation program and achieve a 70% minimum on the Level One Carpentry Final Exam will receive the following credits toward completion of the Carpenter apprenticeship program

Work-Based Training: 450 hours
